2296! The hearing for this bill will be tomorrow, Thursday,
April 17th.
Tomorrow, the
California Assembly Judiciary Committee will hold
a hearing on AB 2296, an industry-driven bill that seeks to
prohibit advocacy groups and journalists from conducting
investigations on criminal conduct regarding animals, reviewing
documents, and sharing information with state and local law
enforcement.
LCA opposes
AB 2296 because too many "legal" research
facilities are not in compliance with Animal Welfare Act
reporting which is intended to minimize pain and distress for
research animals. AB 2296 is also unconstitutional, as it would
infringe on law-abiding citizens' freedom of speech, freedom of
expression, and access to important public information.
