On Saturday, September 17th, 2005 president and founder of Last Chance for Animals, Chris DeRose was joined by actors, directors, lawyers, and others in Intercourse, Pennsylvania to mark Puppy Mill Awareness Day.
Approximately 500,000 puppies per year are bred in puppy mills across the country, facilities known for their filthy, overcrowded conditions and the unhealthy animals they produce. Only half of the dogs bred at puppy mills make it to the pet store; the other half die from the mill’s squalid conditions, hypothermia, starvation, or other horrors of transport. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania -- known as “The Puppy Mill Capital of the East Coast” -- has the largest concentration of these dog breeders for any county in the United States.

Puppy Mill Awareness Day, sponsored by LCA and Adopt-a-Pet, seeks to end this cruel business by educating others about puppy mills and pet stores -- and the wonderful alternative available -- pet adoption!

Those in attendance learned about the ongoing government cover-ups and sloppy law enforcement, heard first hand accounts of undercover investigations into some of the most notorious puppy mills, met the people who save the lives of mill dogs every day, and discovered what WE ALL can do as a citizen to help mill dogs.

The day’s activities also included the surprise and unannounced surrender of 40 puppy mill dogs and 4 kittens who were all “in terrible shape.” Sadly, one little dog dubbed “Liberty” did not make it, but all the rest were provided shelter, food, water, and a chance at a good life. Chris DeRose, Last Chance for Animals president and founder, led attendees in a march down the streets of Lancaster County informing residents and passers by of the activities occurring in their own back yards. Carol from Adopt-A-Pet described the activities of the day a “total success.”

Amanda Sorvino, director, Dogfellas
Rikki Rockett, Poison drummer, animal advocate and Pennsylvania native
