Africa’s mountain gorilla,
one of man’s closest relatives, is in peril. They live in the
forests of the Virunga volcano region, along the borders of
Uganda, Rwanda and the Congo and are one of the world’s rarest
animals. In recent years, their plight has become more
precarious due to poaching, political instability and
deforestation. Sadly, the mountain gorilla is an endangered
species now and there are only about 700 in existence today.
LCA raises funds every year to buy specific equipment that will
help aid in the conservation of the gorillas. In September of
this year, the World Conservation Union - the world's most
respected authority on the plight of Earth's plants and animals
- issued its 2007 Red List of Endangered Species. In this list,
the mountain gorillas were moved from the endangered list to the
critically endangered list.
This year LCA has committed to raising money to buy 80 very
specialized GPS units, the eTrex Venture HC (plus batteries and
re-chargers), to help the Rwandan anti-poaching rangers. The GPS
units will help the rangers pinpoint locations in the extremely
rugged and dangerous conditions they work in. The total
approximate cost is $24,000.

The eTrex Venture HC |
Your support is needed urgently to
help finance GPS equipment for the Rwanda anti-poaching
rangers to aid in their mountain gorilla conservation
efforts.
LCA’s goal is to raise $24,000 to purchase 80 eTrex
Venture HC units (plus batteries and accessories). LCA
will purchase the radios and have them shipped directly to
the Rwandan anti-poaching rangers. |

Your contribution will help conserve an
entire species! Impressive in size and strength,
mountain gorillas can reach a height of 5-6 feet and weigh
450-500 pounds. The male silverback can reach in excess of
800 pounds. They live in family groups, and have a highly
developed social system. They are our closest animal
relative!
Consider this a challenge! Pass the word on to your
colleagues, friends and relatives. Let them know you are
raising money to help conserve the mountain gorilla in
Africa and ask if they can help also!

LCA's
Successful 2006 Gorilla Campaign
|
In 2006, we successful raised enough funds
to purchase 60 Motorola GP340 handheld radios.
Bwindi National Park (also known as the Impenetrable
Forest) in Uganda provides one of the last remaining
sanctuaries for approximately 300 of the mountain
gorillas. The rangers, trackers and wardens of the Ugandan
Wildlife Authority (UWA) are the front line in gorilla
conservation and are responsible for the gorillas’
day-to-day protection. |

Thanks to you, the Ugandan
rangers (pictured above) received their radios from the LCA 2006
fundraising drive!
