Sample Letter to the Editor Regarding HB 5242
Dear Editor:
Circus animals wake up screaming. Shocked with electric prods, beaten with bullhooks, struck with whips, trainers use physical punishment to force them to perform unnatural tricks. The rest of the time, they are confined to small, dirty cages en route from one city to another. They lead terrible lives. Sometimes they lash out, killing their trainers or injuring spectators. More often, they die early of malnutrition, inadequate veterinary care, exposure to the elements, abuse.
They do not have to suffer. H.B. 5242 has been introduced into the Rhode Island legislature. It would prohibit the use of lions, tigers, bears, or elephants in live performances or displays except in accredited zoos. It would spare circus animals a life of misery. Please ask your legislator to support it.
