SAMPLE LETTER TO LEGISLATOR
Dear Legislator:
As a constituent, I urge you to support Rhode Island H 7108, which would prohibit the use of lions, tigers, bears, or elephants in live performances or displays except in accredited zoos. Wild animals behave impulsively and unpredictably and thus pose a threat to the public. In the past decade, several people have been injured and even killed by rampaging circus animals. H. 5242 is essential to protecting the safety of Rhode Island circus spectators.
Moreover, the wild animals forced to perform in circuses sometimes lash out because they are treated so terribly. Separated from other members of their species, they typically spend most of their time in small, dirty cages, traveling from one city to another. Trainers deprive them of food and water and beat them with bullhooks, whips, electric prods, and other devices to force them to perform unnatural tricks. Their physical and psychological needs are not met, and they frequently die prematurely from inadequate food, shelter, and veterinary care. Please join me in supporting H. 5242, the bill that would end their suffering in Rhode Island.
Sincerely,

|
