Dear ___________________:
I am writing to urge you to discontinue your promotion of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Ringling Bros. has been cited numerous times for failing to comply with minimum federal animal welfare regulations. More specifically, the Circus has been cited for causing animals unnecessary trauma, behavioral stress, and physical harm as well as for failing to provide sufficient space, exercise, veterinary care, and protection from the elements. Various Ringling employees have been documented using whips, muzzles, electric prods, and bullhooks to force elephants and other wild animals to perform unnatural tricks.
These tricks teach children nothing about the actual behavior of exotic species. Instead, young people are presented with an image of either ferocious or stupid animals, animals whose only purpose is to amuse humans. In this way, circuses teach disrespect for other living things. They also endanger the lives of the general public; several people have been injured and even killed by mistreated circus animals pushed past their breaking point. It is thus for the
well being of humans and animals alike that I urge you to stop promoting animal circuses. Instead, please consider promoting cruelty-free companies such as the world famous Cirque du
Soleil.
Thank you for your consideration of this important matter. I anxiously await your response.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
