HOW TO BECOME AN EFFECTIVE ADVOCATE FOR ANIMALS

Learn the facts about animal issues - It is important to be informed, if someone asks a question and you don’t know the answer, just say so. Tell the person you will find out the answer and get back to them.

• Read books about animal rights

Remember these rules of conduct - Whether you are talking to others in person, making a telephone call, or writing a letter, practice the following:

• Be polite. Even if you want to express your anger, present yourself in a courteous manner
• Be positive. Acknowledge achievements. Point out opportunities for change
• Focus on one issue
• Ask for a response
• Thank the person for their time and consideration

Commit to specific action – Mavis Frye, one of our Star Seniors, tries to write (by hand) two letters each day. We commend her! You may not have the time to write this much, but how about two letters a week, or per month. Set a goal for yourself and stick with it.

Spread the word - Get your community involved.

• Form a group 
• Post information on bulletin boards in your community 
• Do some “tabling” – set up a table to distribute educational materials, answer questions, and recruit new advocates 
• Distribute flyers 
• Organize a demonstration 
• Speak to other groups

Practice conscious spending

• Boycott the products of companies that support animal suffering
• Only buy cruelty free products
