Authorities Investigate Local Animal Kennel
BY Beth Hunt Reporter KATV Channel 7
Willford - A federal investigation is underway in Sharp County after allegations of animal abuse at a well known kennel. Federal and local authorities searched Martin Creek Kennels in Williford last week, and seized about one hundred twenty five dogs from the owner. The animals are now being kept at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds. Channel 7's Beth Hunt has this story:
Federal authorities aren't saying much about this investigation, but it's obvious they have serious questions about the way one dog dealer is doing business. C.C. Baird and his Martin Creek Kennels are now under heavy investigation by the USDA, the office of the inspector general and the U.S postal service. Baird is a licensed class B dog dealer that sells animals to research facilities across the country. In 1997 he was found guilty of violating the animal welfare act, and was fined 5 thousand dollars. U.S. Attorney Bud Cummins says he won't get into details about what prompted this recent investigation, or why these animals were taken.
(Bud Cummins, U.S Attorney) "These dogs were seized for a variety of reasons, legal reasons that I can't really comment about."
Federal authorities are no longer on Baird's property and they have not made any arrests. One resident says she thinks Baird's business is legitimate.
" He'd been investigated before and I thought it was all over."
Federal authorities will continue their investigation, but it could be some time before anything happens at all.
"Our charges usually come as a result of a grand jury indictment, so that process takes weeks or months and not days and in this case, I can't say if it will happen at all."
