01.28.19 postOn Saturday, February 23rd, the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) will be coming to the Staples Center for their Iron Cowboy bull riding competition.

Rodeos and rodeo-type activities like bull riding are exhibitions of animal cruelty that are sanctioned in the guise of entertainment. Throughout the events, tools of torment (spurs, tight, painful flank straps, and 5,000-volt electric prods) are used to encourage aggressive and overall wild behavior in animals.

During rodeos and rodeo-type events like bull riding, steer wrestling, and calf roping, animals suffer tremendous psychological and physical traumas, including broken limbs, pulled muscles, torn ligaments, cardiac arrest, crushed tracheas, broken necks, and much more. Animals that are injured do not typically receive veterinary care and are killed instead; those that do survive competitions almost always end their careers in slaughterhouses.

A growing number of jurisdictions already have rodeo prohibitions or restrictions in place, including Pasadena, Irvine, and Napa County, California; Fort Wayne, Indiana; St. Petersburg, Florida; and Greenburgh, New York.

The city of Los Angeles has become a national leader in safeguarding the rights and welfare of animals as can be seen with their recent fur ban. Rodeos and rodeo-type activities like bull riding are clearly cruel and abusive and should not be allowed in LA!

Dear Council Member [Last Name],

I am writing to ask that you support a ban on rodeos and rodeo-type activities in the city of Los Angeles.Rodeos and rodeo-type events are exhibitions of animal cruelty that are sanctioned in the guise of competition. They employ the use of tools of torment — including spurs, tight flank straps, and 5,000-volt electric prods — in order to encourage bucking and aggressiveness and often result in severe psychological and physical traumas including anxiety attacks, broken limbs, and even death for the animals involved.A growing number of jurisdictions have already prohibited or restricted rodeos — including Irvine, CA and Pasadena, CA — and I respectfully urge the city of Los Angeles, a leader in protecting the rights and welfare of animals to do the same.

Sincerely,
